Project: Game Over
Believe it or not the death sequence in the game isn't as simple as you would most likely have thought. There are 4 unique states that can occur after losing all your life and amazingly 3 are playable!
Phase 1
Characteristics:
  • you can ride on Epona
  • can't use weapons
  • allows screen changes
  • start menu is accessible
  • same control as gameplay
  • objects load fine

How to do the trick:

  • Lose almost all your life. Make it so that one bomb hit will kill you. Do the master glitch. Warp to outside the Fire Temple, go see the Gorons, and then exit through the Lost Woods. Then go Kokori Forest. Go to the bridge where the running man finishes. Throw a bomb and exit at the same time you get hit. This may take many tries. You should be taken to Hyrule Field and be on Epona without any life if it worked correctly. You will not be able to use any weapons even with the swordless Link glitch. Link will die whenever he gets off Epona. If you do the master glitch again while dead when you die inside the tent the screen will cut and when you return everything will be dimmed.

*See the Master Glitch page for more info on this trick.

Strange things it can cause:

  • If you do the trick and then enter the tent via the master glitch when you die the screen will fade and will still be faded after you come back from the death sequence. It is obvious that the programmers never intended you to be able to die there so they never worried about the consequences.
  • You can die after getting off of Epona by doing either the archery game or the obstacle course. The game will have you talk to the person telling you about how good your performance in the mini game was and then you will drop dead instantaneously....try it and you will notice how weird it actually seems.

Phase 2
Characteristics:
  • can't ride Epona (you go through her)
  • can't use weapons
  • no access to the start menu
  • must have iron boots on
  • can't change screens
  • control is altered
  • objects load fine except enemies are motionless and small objects like bushes don't appear.

How to do the trick:

  • *This trick is from N64CC and was posted by Fat_turtle@hotmail.com.

First off, do the Swordless Link Trick. Go to a place where you can hookshot, and use your horse at the same time and be able to drown. AND you must have the Zora Tunic unequipped and a bottled fairy. Jump on Epona and play the ocarina to get off. Then equip the Iron Boots and jump into a lake or moat, etc. When the countdown to drowning starts, press A to teleport back to Epona. While the countdown is still ticking, hookshot something while on Epona. Make sure Epona is standing still before you hookshot anything or you are screwed. Stay on Epona with your hookshot connected to something until time runs out. You will 'die' unpainfully on Epona. (Don't worry, it doesn't count on your death record). The fairy wil rejuvenate you and when you are 'alive' again, press A to dismount Epona and you'll moon jump . When you land, you can't look through you inventory, use anything, enemies will be frozen, you will walk with the sound of Iron Boots, your life will be at ZERO! and other odd things (try swimming).

Strange things it can cause:

  • Basically by this point the game is pretty messed up. You can't interact with the surroundings. You can't exit the level and the play control isn't the same. You have on iron boots so your motion is limited. Since the start menu is not available and you can't exit the screen you must quit the game if you want to leave the area.

Phase 3
Characteristics:

  • all objects are black except you and Epona
  • can't ride Epona (you go through her)
  • can't use weapons
  • no access to the start menu
  • must have iron boots on
  • can't change screens
  • control is altered

How to do the trick:

  • Simply do the previous trick but don't have the fairy for when you die.

Strange things it can cause:

  • By the time you do this trick there is really not much you can do. It is difficult to move around with the altered game control and the gaming environment being completely black with very few exceptions (usually just you and Epona...sometime objects that were nearby when you died may still show up).

Phase 4
The final phase is of course the death sequence where game play seizes and you have to decide if you want to save and/or continue. Even the normal death sequence leads to some strange things though:

There you have it: all you ever would want to know about the death sequence. If you found anything about this not listed here please email me and tell me all about it.
